Therapeutic Parenting

What is therapeutic parenting?

Therapeutic parenting is a unique approach to raising children, specifically designed for those who have experienced early life trauma. It involves being consistent, empathic, insightful, and connected in a way that differs from traditional parenting. The goal is to build trusting relationships with the child to provide a safe and predictable environment.

Caregivers play a crucial role in creating a secure and healing environment that supports the child’s emotional well-being, social development, and overall recovery. Therapeutic parenting also focuses on promoting attachment and developmental trauma reparenting. Additionally, psychoeducation sessions are conducted with parents to teach them how to parent their children in a therapeutically minded way.

Therapeutic parenting foundations use the P.A.C.E model, which stands for Playfulness, Acceptance, Curiosity, and Empathy, and DDP (Dyadic Developmental Parenting).

What is therapeutic Parent coaching?

In a  Therapeutic parent coach session, this is a goal-driven process that provides solution-focused support.

This includes setting goals, refining parental skills, psychoeducation and cultivating positive relationships with the child and parent.

In this non-judgmental setting parents and carers can learn effective learning techniques and strategies to build emotional regulation.Therapeutic parent coaching focuses on helping families manage stress and enabling parents to develop stress management strategies. It promotes resilience, self-development, and well-being in both parents and their children.

What is therapeutic Life story work ?

Therapeutic life story work is a supportive intervention that involves a practical, caring approach. It brings the child and caregiver together to explore and investigate the child's past experiences. This is delivered through arts, crafts, and games that are suitable for the child's age.  This helps the child to feel and express their emotions in a safe environment.

Children who may benefit:

  • Life story work will benefit children who have been adopted or fostered.

  • Who are asking questions about their past

  • Those who have experienced grief and loss

  • Lived through past environmental trauma

Why do Therapeutic Life Story Work

 • Therapeutic Life Story Work allows children and young people to explore, question, and understand past events in their lives. It gives them a voice and a safe space to feel and express their emotions when making sense of past experiences and their relation to their current thoughts and feelings.

 • The therapeutic benefit of Life Story Work is being able to link a young person's past to current feelings and behaviour. If done with empathy for what the child experienced and recognition of what they did not receive, this can positively impact a child’s internal world and emotional regulation.

All therapeutic interventions are bespoke and tailored to each individual's needs.
